Flying Fish Brewing Co.

May 14, 2020 | Brewery, Quick Sip

Meet New Jersey’s largest brewery who have been at it for over 24 years creating incredible craft beers. Take a beer break and see what Flying Fish President Lou Romano has to say about the brewery, their brews and what’s in store.

You have been around a while, how did you get started?

Flying Fish Brewing got started in 1996 by our Founder, Gene Muller, as a completely online/virtual brewery before that was even a “thing.” In the days of dial-up internet, Gene would engage with fans about beer styles, names, and imagery before he could afford a brick and mortar brewery. He chose “Flying Fish” because it’s a constellation in the Southern Hemisphere that exemplifies “exploration and adventure,” and Gene wanted to push the boundaries of what drinkers were exposed to in the mid-1990s. Obviously, his hobby attracted enough attention for him to make Flying Fish Brewing his full time career.

What is your favorite thing about working at Flying Fish?

I came on board in late 2017, as Gene started to contemplate what could be the next stage of evolution for the brewery. We reimagined our package type, as we shifted almost all our production to cans, as well as redesigned all of our existing labels and brands. Additionally, our whole team chipped in to evaluate where we may have had “holes” in our style lineup, and we worked to develop compelling brews to fill those gaps.

Therefore, my current favorite thing about brewing is turning people on to what Flying Fish is TODAY, versus what they may remember it to be (or heard it was) years ago.

What one beer of yours would you want people to try?

It’s difficult to chose just one, because we subscribe to the belief that beer is occasion based….different settings call for different styles….but I feel like our team is very proud of Hazy Bones IPA. It’s a nice example of our evolution from the can imagery to the liquid within.

What exciting stuff can we expect from Flying Fish in the near future?

I think you can expect to see a healthy diet of new innovation, but as a brewery with 24 years of brewing history, there’s a pile of brands that drinkers remember from the past and ask to see resurrected. This especially applies to the EXIT SERIES beers, which was also an idea of Gene’s that was ahead of its time. We may look to bring back a few of those styles that are requested most often, with some modernized twists.

How do you try to differentiate yourselves in a wonderful but burgeoning craft beer market?

I think we try and focus on making a disparate portfolio of really solid styles and not pigeon hole ourselves in to only one. Our current 15 Pack Variety is an example of that….there’s a beer for every occasion and taste, and it comes at a reasonable price tag. That price-to-value proposition is something I think will be even more important as craft drinkers evaluate their choices in today’s environment.

How can we get our hands on your beer?

Our beer is sold throughout the states of NJ/PA/MD/DE and WV. We have a BEER FINDER on that helps narrow the search to a retailer near you. We also have a Tasting Room at the brewery that’s currently open 7 days for curbside pickup. We’re excited to see a return to enjoying pints with our friends there when it’s safe to do so.

Check out their tasty brews at their brewery location or find their beers using the Beer Finder. Cheers.

Allagash. Kurkuma

Allagash. Kurkuma

TURMERIFIC! Let's face it. Allagash can do no wrong. Their craft is on point. But when you think about using Turmeric as an ingredient in beer, I had to wonder whether it would work. Their Kurkuma is a saison with an added kick of turmeric. Pouring a mildly hazy straw...

Pariah. Only 90’s Kids Will Get This

BEST DECADE EVER! Being a 90's kid (eek, showing my age here), I often hark back to the days of living carefree, with no adult responsibilities, no bills to pay, and all the time in the world to just do! So, when I saw Pariah Brewing has an Only 90's Kids Will Get...

Bolero Snort. Ragin’ Bull

Bolero Snort. Ragin’ Bull

RAGIN' GOOD! The humble amber ale. A staple beer that often gets overlooked by the hop bombs and puckering brews. This beer style is often standard fare, brewed to cater for less adventurous drinkers. But in this style lies the beauty of a beverage that is hard to...
