Heater Allen. Abzug Lager
BARGAIN BASEMALTS!
Sometimes you just need an unfussy beer that you know tastes good, is easy to drink and hits the spot. Abzug from Heater Allen Brewing may just fit the bill. This beer is a take on a traditional style of Vienna lager that is lower in alcohol and means ‘discount’! Don’t let that put you off though, as it is still satisfying and sessionable.
Copper in color, the beer doesn’t give off to much in the way of aromas, teasing the nose with toasted malts and a hint of stone fruit. The maltiness follows in the taste with mellow caramels and toasted oats, balanced with a pinch of floral hop bitterness. The crisp finish leaves you wanting more and more you can have…responsibly of course!
3.8% ABV | McMinnville, OR
Description from the brewery:
In the late 1800s, Vienna brewers made three versions of their amber lagers. The highest alcohol version was called Marzen or Fest Bier. The lowest alcohol version was called Abzug, which means “discount” or “reduction” in German. These beers were the Austrian version of session beers. Our version tips the scales at 3.75% alcohol by volume. It’s crisp, refreshing, with a nice floral Saaz hop nose, a malty palate, and a clean finish. This is the beer we brew for the wineries during harvest, but it’s available to everyone.
